February/March ~ 2012 From the Pastor’s Desk:
As I begin this letter for the newsletter, I think of how each New Year comes with resolutions.I searched Google to see what the top resolutions for the year 2012 are and you guessed
it, they are about the same as every year. 1. Get into
Shape 2. Eat Right
3. Save Money 4. Quit Smoking
5. and Volunteer It’s not surprising that #1 and #2 have to do with eating
right and working out. They kind of go hand in hand. We all know that’s what we need to do, but somehow every year it
seems we have that on our minds, but do not put it into action.
If you think about the eating part, the first things
I think of when I think of eating are the holidays. Eating from the buffet table of life, throughout your
holiday travels. Most people go traveling from one party to another and from one family event to another. All kinds of food,
some you like and some you don’t, and sometimes you even eat things that you don’t especially like, just because
it’s there. Now, for those of you who are reading through the Bible this year,
if you are like me, you have tasted something good, almost like honey. To me (and I hope for you) so far this year, reading
through the Bible has been very fulfilling. I have seen some things in the Scriptures that I have never seen before, even
though I’ve read it before. Psalm 119:103 NIV “How sweet are your words to my taste,
sweeter than honey to my mouth!”
That verse from Psalms has been like beautiful
music to my ears. Most of you have heard Nancy Palik say “That’s my favorite song!” and at the
time I believe it is, but I also know she has several, because each one of those songs that she mentions has special meaning
for certain circumstances and it’s a joy to see her express that to us as a congregation.
Well, Psalm 119:103 is my favorite verse (for today),
because it’s so true. It has special meaning for me as we travel down this road of reading through the Bible together.
A lot has happened in the scriptures in the early part of the year and I pray that you don’t miss it. If you haven’t
started to read, I’m sure you can catch up and then start the daily readings, I’m positive you won’t be
disappointed. If you have been reading right along, keep it up. There’s better reading ahead. A friend of mine from Kansas writes an email to me every now and
then and he always closes his notes with the same thing. He says, “I’ve read it to the end – and we Win!”
He’s right, but I also don’t want to miss what’s in the middle. Like a good meal, I know dessert is coming,
but I’m not going to push that fried chicken aside just to get to it. It will still be just as good when I get to it.
Don’t forget, we will also be incorporating
our daily Bible readings into our Wednesday Night Bible Study and we have already had some very good discussions about what
we have read. So, here’s my advice to you if you want to start this year out by getting fit
and eating right (which are the top two New year’s Resolutions for 2012) eat from the Word of God – it will do
you right. Remember that slogan “Got Milk?” how about “Got Scripture?”
It’s been said “Milk does the body good” but my thought about that is if you were to add one to
your slogan list, add this, “Scripture, does the body good!” Both your individual body and the Church
body.
And if you are reading
through the daily Bible readings, I’m sure you would agree
